With the beginning of September comes rain and cooler weather, so it’s time to start preparing the garden for winter. I’m hoping to squeeze in a fall harvest, so I prepared two beds for planting. The others will get turned over and mulched so they can rest and wait for spring, and hopefully will not be too hard to work come March.

This bed got turned over and sifted in preparation for fall planting.

After sifting I added some coir. The soil here gets extremely dry during the summers and my spring vegetables didn’t do that well because of the dryness. So I’m hoping the coir will help. I also added some compost with a little chicken manure.

I dug out the potato bed and found a few stray potatoes I missed. I’ll probably start over from new seed potatoes rather than reuse these.

Some of my beds need replacing. I’ll do one at a time since it takes a lot of work to dig out the soil, replace the wood, and put everything back together again. I’ll do this one first:

I’m also in the process of replacing some old strawberries and the big strawberry bed, with new beds and starting over from strawberry runners. These strawberries have been going for too many years and need refreshed.

I harvested one of the last carrots from the summer and checked on the apples. They’re almost ripe!
